Ephesus

The center of travel and commerce in ancient times. Famous for one of the seven wonders, the temple of Artemis. The home church for John and probably also Jesus mother Mary, and the first church to be addressed in Revelation.

Laodicea

A wealthy city, famous for its black wool and its medical school who produced a salve for eyes. The water for the city was brought by a system of stone pipes. The seventh church to be addressed in Revelation.

Pergamos (Pergamus)

Pergamum was a cultural city. The altar dedicated to Zeus was excavated 1878-1897 and was moved to Germany, and is still at display in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin. John referred to this altar as Satan´s Throne.

Philadelphia

A center of the wine industry. Its chief deity was Dionysus, the god of wine. The area here is geologically unstable and known for many earthquakes. The sixth church to be addressed in Revelation, and is promised to be a pillar, something appealing to a "Shaky Town."

Sardis

A center famous for gold and riches. It was here coined money was invented. It is the fifth church to be addressed in Revelation.

Smyrna

Smyrna was the second city to receive a letter from the apostle John in the book of Revelation.

Modern Izmir, it was here Smyrna was located.

Thyatira

A center for craft and trade guilds that used the natural resources of the area. The apostle Paul visited the city several times during his missionary travels. It is the fourth church to be addressed in Revelation.

Thyatira had a large military detachment, and recognized for its wool and dye industry.
